Identify the type of zipper-area distortion first
Rippling, lengthwise stretching and visible zipper tape can have different causes. Review shell stretch, zipper-tape thickness, sewing tension and reinforcement strength together rather than assuming one cause.
Match tape width to seam allowance and shell thickness
Excessively wide tape can over-stabilize the front edge, while narrow tape may miss the required support area. Make test pieces using the zipper seam and edge allowance, then check that no boundary shows on the face after fusing or sewing.
Match stretch to shell movement
A non-stretch tape on knit or stretch shells can pull or wrinkle only the zipper area. Conversely, a woven shell requiring stability may need a specification that controls stretch, so record grain direction and stretch level first.
Fusing and sewing order determines appearance
Changing when tape is applied or when the zipper is fixed can create a length difference between front edges. Define cooling time after fusing, zipper position and top/bottom finishing order on the approved sample and include them in the work instruction.
Check face-side marks by zipper type
Metal, coil and waterproof zippers differ in tape thickness and flexibility, so their marks on the shell differ too. With thin or lustrous shells, inspect the surface both zipped and opened.
